Welcome back to another edition of The Creative Hub of Elgin County.

Sponsored by Mortgage with Brad - More mortgage options. Less stress.

Each week, this newsletter does one thing really well:
It helps people find what’s happening locally, and it helps local creators, businesses, and events get in front of more people.

The more we share what’s going on in Elgin County, the more we strengthen the kind of community we all want to live in — one that supports local, fills rooms, and celebrates the people building something here.

If you’ve got an event coming up, a new project, or a small business you want more people to discover, send it in anytime.
And if you know someone who loves supporting local, forward this to them and help us grow the hub.

Let’s jump into what’s happening this week.

Creative Hub Spotlight: St. Thomas Duplicate Bridge Club Turns 80!

Did you know St. Thomas is home to one of the longest continuously running duplicate bridge clubs in the region?

The St. Thomas Duplicate Bridge Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year — and they’re hoping to welcome some new faces to the table.

What is duplicate bridge?

Duplicate bridge is a fun (and surprisingly social) competitive card game where teams play the same hands, and scores are compared at the end of the session. Winners are announced for both North–South and East–West partnerships.

You don’t have to be a “serious” player to take part — the club is focused on keeping it welcoming, and they’ve been actively helping beginners learn and transition into regular games.

When & where they play

The club meets twice a week:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

  • 225 Chestnut St. (Seniors Centre)

Membership is $20/year, and game fees are $8 (to help cover the cost of the space).

New to bridge? Lessons available!

They also offer beginner bridge lessons to help new players learn the game:

  • Mondays at 7:00 PM

  • Central United Church (135 Wellington St.)

  • Lessons are $5 per week

  • Typically, 12–20 beginners attend

And here’s the best part — once you’re ready, you can graduate into real games through their monthly Pro-Am afternoons (beginner paired with an experienced player).

Important note: Space is limited — anyone interested should contact the club through their Facebook page:

Upcoming social event

The club also hosts social gatherings — their next one is:

  • February 10: Valentine’s Extravaganza lunch

  • Before their regular afternoon game

  • $10 per person (tickets sold in advance)

Why they’re reaching out

Like many groups post-pandemic, the club has seen membership drop from around 130 members to about 30 today. They’re hoping a little community awareness will help introduce bridge to new people (and keep this amazing local tradition alive).

If you’ve ever been curious about bridge — or want a new weekly activity that’s social, challenging, and welcoming — this is a great place to start.

Want to check it out?

You can stop by during a Tuesday/Thursday game, or join the beginner lessons on Monday nights.
